Commentary
My portfolio performance in January surprised me. Overall portfolio value increased 2.8% to $194,360 mainly due to $4.7k of capital injections. Capital losses amounted to only $100+, which was surprising considering all the negativity surrounding the Wuhan Coronavirus.
This once again brings my portfolio value to a new all-time high, putting me in sight of $200,000. This positive news may be short-lived as the situation in China evolves. However, I’ll stay invested for now with an eye on opportunities to add.
Significant transactions
There were a few transactions this month as I performed some re-balancing / pruning of weaker counters:
- Took out my profits in Avenue Therapeutics
- Rotated those profits into Zoetis
- Divested Starhill Global REIT to raise cash for warchest
- Initiated a position in Alibaba, with an eye to add on as the share price declines
I fully divested my small position in Starhill Global REIT as I feel that management is at best fair. I anticipate Starhill to continue to struggle this year due to lack of growth catalyst and continued tourism headwinds.
At the same time, I initiated a position in Alibaba to increase my exposure to Chinese Tech companies. I’m looking at getting back into Tencent as well at lower prices. I may be a little early, but time will tell.
As usual, this is not a call to buy or sell securities and its just sharing my own thought process for your information. Please do your own due diligence.
Endowus CPF OA Portfolio

As you may know, I’ve started investing my CPF OA funds with Endowus. As such, I will present my portfolio performance going forward for those interested to know more.
I started with initial $5,000 investment with a $500 recurring monthly top ups. So far its been slightly positive largely thanks to the US market’s performance.
With the emergence of the Wuhan Coronavirus, I may tactically adjust my recurring monthly investment amount upwards to take advantage of the price declines.
If you want to learn more about Endowus, do check out my review. Also, if you’re interested in opening an account, do feel free to sign up through my referral link.
For a limited time till 8th February, Endowus is running a limited CNY referral promotion where all referral sign-ups will be entitled to a $38 access fee discount, instead of the usual $20. Do consider it if you like to sign up.
Setting up credit facilities
Over the past few months, I’ve been processing credit limit reviews for all my credit cards. This is to enable me to quickly perform short term balance transfers to augment my war chest in the event of a market crash.
I’m more comfortable with using balance transfers than using margin financing as these do not have the possibility of triggering margin calls when I get my entry timing way off.
Although the interest rate on these balance transfers are slightly higher than margin, I see it as paying for a relative peace of mind.
Blog updates – new Freebies section
As I use more and more services with referral links, I thought I’ll consolidate it all into a Freebies page. This will allow you all to know all the services I use that have referral bonuses which have mutual benefits. There are currently 5 subsections – Investments, Cryptocurrencies, Credit Cards, Electricity Retailer and Webhosting. Do check it out if you want to sign up for anything and support this site in the process.
Do note that this list is specially curated as I feel these services are beneficial to readers. I do not get any other benefits other than the minor incentives disclosed.
